The first SOS Children’s Village in The Gambia was established in 1982 at Bakoteh. The village was officially inaugurated in 1983 as the first SOS programme in The Gambia. SOS Children’s Village Bakoteh initially started with six family houses and gradually increasing to ten family houses due to the increase in demand for admission of more needy and vulnerable children.
With the capacity of 100 children, SOS Children’s Village provides a holistic childcare support for children and young people in need of care, ranging from education, psychosocial support, health and care. SOS Children’s Village Bakoteh also has a youth facility, which caters for young people transiting to adulthood. The facility currently has a capacity for 30 youths but currently accommodate 29 youths.
