Youth Employability in The Gambia
Young people all over the world, are facing challenges when trying to find work and transition to independence, as many lack the opportunities and technical skills needed to get a job.
The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened this trend and unemployment among young people is now far higher than for adults. The Gambia has the third highest youth NEET rate (Not in Employment, Education or Training) in the world1. The NEET rate is 45% for young men and 56% for young women. 49% of the
population live in poverty. The figures are even higher in the rural areas of the country such as in the Upper River Region (URR) where up to 70% of people live in poverty and the vast majority of young people are unemployed. The pandemic has exasperated this situation
To address these complex challenges SOS Children’s Villages UK (SOS UK) and SOS Children’s Villages in The Gambia (SOS Gambia) have together developed a five-year Youth Training and Employment.
Programme in Basse, the capital of URR. Collaboratively designed, this programme seeks to ensure sustainable access to skills training for 1,000 young people in URR and support them to become economically empowered and fulfil their potential.
